The Awkward Stage

Share
Anything you want to learn, you are going to be awkward at it at first. Give yourself permission to be a beginner, a learner….Give yourself permission to go through the awkward stage. It is a required step in the journey toward mastery.

Can you imagine a baby one day just standing up one day and walking without ever falling down? Of course not. The baby may cry or look astonished when she finds herself flat on the floor, but she isn’t worried that anyone will make fun of her initial attempts. She’s not thinking of herself as a failure when she falls. We need to approach new challenges with an openness to being naïve, unpolished and maybe even looking dumb for a while. It gives us an excuse to ask questions, seek help, laugh at ourselves and experience being humbled.

When we got a car with a stick shift it seemed like it should be so easy, but it wasn’t for me. I still have memories of praying as I approached a certain light on my way to work in Washington, DC. There was a slight incline in the road at this light. If I had to stop for a red light, I was so scared I would roll back into the car behind me before I could coordinate the clutch and the gas pedals to go forward. It was awkward but one day I finally got it. Soon I could do it quite naturally without thinking and was so proud of myself! What would you like to learn? Give yourself permission to go through the awkward stage.
